Artifice is the term for all forms of technology within the world of the kinden including engineering, chemistry, and many other fields. A person practiced in these fields is known as an artficer. The very first device that was considered artifice was the crossbow, the invention of which heralded in the Apt Revolution. Artifice is the mirror image of Magic. It can only be learned or practiced by apt individuals. Inapt individuals find artifice terrifying or deeply offensive to the senses. They experience motion sickness on mechanical means of transport and cannot use or even concieve of the mechanisms of any piece of artifice. Over the course of the series, many innovations are artifice are made due to the many wars of the kinden acting as a catalyst.
